September is the month for the Mid-south Fair. It is a nice way to spend the day as a family, albeit a little expensive. this year we were able to purchase "family packs" at a local grocery store. There were two varieties of this package - one cost $25 and included two admissions to the fair. $20 in ride tickets, $16 in food and a few other extras. The other one cost $50 and included 4 admissions to the fair, $40 in ride tickets, $32 in food coupons and some other extras. This is the one we purchased thinking this would more than cover our day. Wrong! The kids went through $40 in ride tickets in 1 1/2 hours! And we went through $32 in food in less time than that! (Hey, funnel cakes are expensive!)
But you don't go to the fair because its cheap. The Midsouth fair has the typical fair type activities. Rides, shows, craft, etc. A new one (for me, at least) was the Titanic ride. This was a slide made out of moonwalk (bouncy) type material in the shape of the Titanic as the stern was rising out of the sea when it was sinking. (Think of the scene of Rose and Jack hanging off the back of the boat.) The kids climb up some stairs in the middle (under the 'smokestacks') and come out on top to slide down. My kids loved it, especially my 2 1/2 year old who got a round of applause as he got off, because he was so cute screaming with glee all the way down.
There are shows every night, some rather good Blues bands for which Memphis is famous. There is also a rodeo a couple of times a day. My favorite, though was the pig races. This was better than horse racing except you couldn't bet on them. Hmmmm maybe a suggestion for next year?
Who doesn't love fair food? Turkey legs, corn-on-the-cob-on-a-stick, cotton candy, Fiddle sticks, funnel cakes, cheese fries, and it wouldn't be Memphis without bar-b-que. Everyone knows calories and cholesterol are not admitted into the fair.
One thing that differentiates the Midsouth fair from other fairs is that your admission also gives you admission to LibertyLand. This is Memphis' local amusement park which isin't much of an amusement park compared to Six Flags, Disneyland or many others. It does, however, boast the oldest operating wooden roller coaster. (And this is supposed to be a selling feature?) The operators actually start it by pulling a huge lever mounted in the ground. But this was Elvis' favorite ride. He even rented out Libertyland once on his birthday and rode the Zippin Pippin over and over again.
So if you are ever in Memphis in later September, check out the Midsouth fair. Just make sure you bring plenty of money. And some Alka Seltzer.
