I finally made it to Cibo on a recent visit to Austin. After reading some intriguing reviews, I was curious to try some of the Northern Italian dishes that are rather out of the ordinary and not so easily found everywhere. I tried the Sautéed Calamari and I was extremely pleased with a dish so reminiscent of my travels to Italy, and especially Venice. The Calamari were tender, sautéed to perfection and attractively presented with tomato, parsley and garlic on a bed of soft polenta. I love the polenta and seafood combination and this dish was a great way to start the evening. My friend and I shared the Risotto alla Contadina (for two) and, never having had this risotto combination before we just had to try it, even thought the preparation requires 20 minutes as listed in the menu. It was well worth the wait. The creamy risotto with Prosciutto, Potato, Kale and Parmigiano Reggiano certainly lived up to our expectation and we were both pleased with our choice. The ingredients were well balanced, and while each could be clearly tasted distinctively none were overpowering the other. A really great risotto.
The Branzino alla Griglia was lightly seasoned and grilled just like it is done along the Adriatic coast. The server did a superb job of cutting and serving this tender and tasty fish. The Tomato-Parsley-Lemon salad served with the fish complemented and enhanced the Branzino flavor while still allowing the fish to be the central element.
I highly recommend Cibo. The staff is friendly and well versed on explaining the dishes and the preparation. Also very helpful were the good wine suggestions. Chef Packwood has designed a menu that provides a great and memorable dining experience. I will be back, ready to try more of his creative offerings.
