We stayed at a Holiday Inn on IH-35 (exit 239)during our visit to Austin. At the front of the hotel parking lot is a restaurant called "Dixie's Roadhouse." Although large and clean, it didn't look very appealing from the outside. It is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, but I didn't see any cars outside it until mid-afternoon.
The day before we left we finally tried it out of desperation (they delivered room service to the hotel). We had hot legs (not itty bitty wings!), and some type of cajun chicken covered in that Cajun brown butter sauce with crawfish. It was unbelievable. The biscuit that arrived with it was flaky, the cajun chicken was tender and you could taste the stick of butter that must have gone into it. The hot legs are incredibly good---especially with beer. Unlike Buffalo wings, these legs weren't slathered with hot sauce and baked. I think they were fried instead, but the taste was to die for! We then ordered gumbo. The gumbo had tons of crawfish and floated on top was fried okra. My husband grew up on the South and told me that everything was fried in lard. No one in the Northeast would even think about buying lard, but it made a huge difference in the taste of the food. I'm definitely a convert.
We went for lunch right before heading to the airport. OOOOOOOOOOOOH BOY WAS IT GOOD! We started off with fried green tomatoes with fried okra. We gobbled it up in about 10 seconds! My husband had this great frozen sour watermelon margerita. I HIGHLY recommend it. It was sweet and sour and refreshing all at the same time and a great change from strawberry.I had Red Beans and Rice with Andouille Sausage, my husband had Crawfish Etoufee and my sister had a Catfish Po-Boy. We also ordered Crawfish Po-Boy sandwiches to go to eat on the plane. It was honestly the best food I had in months. We wanted to stay an extra day just to eat at that restaurant.
The service was VERY friendly and they had 4 different kinds of hot sauce. They also have $1.50 bottled beers. If you are EVER in Austin and sick of bbq or Tex-Mex, PLEASE give this place a try. You really won't regret it!!!
