The Bats under the Congress Street bridge are truly spectacular. But make sure to watch them from the best vantage point. There are three main places to watch:
1. TGIF's on the Lake. Get there early for outdoor seating, and you can watch the bats fly at dusk. Nothing like eating a burger and enjoying wildlife.
2. Shoreside, Austin-American Statesmen. This basically refers to the South side of Town Lake, where you can sit on the hill and see the bats fly above.
3. On the Bridge. The biggest thrill is watching the bats fly out from right beneath you! Stand on the Congress Street bridge for the most excitement. But be careful, too. When the wind is shooting West, the bats tend to fly back over your head rather than out East. They probably won't hurt you, but don't touch them.
Summary: On the bridge for the most thrills, at TGIF's for a relaxing evening. Also, remember that there are many more bats in the Summer than in the Spring.
