| NoniaBidnis's Full Review: Congress Ave. Bridge Bats |
We moved to Austin in 1997, and luckily it was at the time of year (October) when we could still go see the bats depart for their evening out. At first, we were just using the jogging trail around Town Lake and
found there was a kind of strange area near the Statesman building... wow, that's the bridge where the bats live!
During the nice weather season (which is long in Texas), the bats come out at sunset time to go foraging for food (or whatever they do when they go out at night!). What a fascinating sight! There is a black ribbon in the sky that stretches as far as you can see off in the horizon of these tiny creatures flying in swirling formation. We went back many many times in the two years we were lucky enough to live in Austin before moving out of state. Of course it is also FREE.
I saw very few mosquitos when we lived in Austin, this is the truth! I would credit the bats with this phenomena. Austin is a completely cool town, and this is just one of the great things to see/do.
