| cherii's Full Review: Congress Ave. Bridge Bats |
My husband and I moved to Austin in May of 1999. Going to see the bats is one of the first things I wanted to do. It was absolutely fabulous, BUT the grassy knoll near the bridge was packed with kids, blankets, picnic baskets, animals, and frantic parents. Not that these things are always bad, but I wanted to show my parents a better time when they first came to visit us.
So, I checked out some websites (including http://www.austin360.com/local/bats2/pat-beach.htm) and talked to co-workers. I finally found a place that provides "bat tours" on Town Lake with Capital Cruises (http://austin.citysearch.com/E/V/AUSTX/0004/71/29/1.html). It was a fantastic experience. The tours depart approximately 30 minutes before sunset. Prices are $8 for adults, $6.50 for seniors, and $5 for kids. This information is not on the website, so I called today to verify it. I believe they have various boat sizes, but we went in a nice covered boat that held about 7 of us, including the tour guide-type person. He was very knowledgeable, but the couple that rode along with us 4 made the trip even more enjoyable.
The boat was covered, so we didn't have to worry about the "guano problem." Also, we had a much better view than from land. The guide gave us a history of the bats and of the lake/river (part of the Colorado River). We also went directly under the bridge. It was absolutely fascinating. I highly recommend it if you are ever in the area!
