| gurdonark's Full Review: Texas Hill Country |
The Texas hill country features many aspects not familiar to most of Texas. The rolling hills, abundant prickly pear cactus, and smallish trees make for a beautiful and somewhat unusual landscape. The whole place makes for wonderful driving tours through little farm to market roads. During a January trip, we saw numerous wild deer, all small, graceful animals rather than the larger ones found elsewhere. Many local farmers keep goats and
sheep, some of exotic varieties. The trees are filled with hawks, while the ground is alive with rabbits and, of course, a good few longhorn cattle. Fredericksburg itself is a 9,000 person town, filled with bed and breakfast establishments, the Nimitz Museum and the Museum of the Pacific War (Admiral Nimitz grew up there), a nearby Wildflower Seed Farm (very interesting and helpful folks) a small herb farm (the cafe has antelope burger on the menu), and tons of German and Texan restaurants. Although weather can be variable in winter, winter is an excellent time to visit because January and February are not heavily touristed. The Museum of the Pacific War is particularly moving, as the sheer enormity of the conflict is portrayed.
There is good antique shopping, and the prices are not so beset with the "tourist inflation" as one might expect.
This is a small town, but one which has more to do than a short visit will permit. This entire area understands the importance historic preservation, and sometimes it seems that each German farm homeplace has its own plaque.
Outdoor parks nearby abound, from the bison at the LBJ
park to the easy but worthwhile climb up landmark Enchanted Rock to a the bat tunnel with bat flight viewing available in summer (and a nice short hiking trail for the winter visitor). I cannot recommend this town highly enough for the visitor hunting a rest in interesting surroundings.
Even the little internet cafe was a delight!
