San Marcos, Texas, is a great place to get it away from it all and relax. I have lived in San Marcos over five years now, so here's my biased opinion about what I like to see and do in town: (1) San Marcos River -- a crystal-clear, spring-fed river running right through the middle of town. Park for free in one of the city park lots, walk up and just jump in. Swim, fish, snorkel, canoe, whatever! From Memorial Day to Labor Day you can rent a large inner tube and float for only a few dollars. A truck will come pick you and your tube up at the end of the trip and take you back to where you started, (2) Places to eat -- the fanciest place in town is Palmer's. Other local favorites include Imperial Garden, Cafe on the Square, Rogelio's, Cafe del Corte, Wesray's, and Kismet Cafe, (3) Shopping outlet mall just south of town is one of the top tourist destinations in all of Texas, competing with the Alamo(!),(4) Aquarena Springs -- an educational theme park with glass-bottom boat rides (5)The city parks down by the River are great for strolling, jogging, or picnics, (6) There is a cool store downtown called Paper Bear which is literally stuffed full of cool T-shirts, posters, handmade jewelry, greeting cards, games, toys, party supplies, stationery, pottery, etc., (7) Southwest Texas State University --go up to the top floor of the library and enjoy an awesome 360 degree view for miles! Any time of year is a good time to visit. Winters are very mild. Since the River is a constant 70 to 72 degrees Fahrenheit all year long, it is possible to swim on a warm January day! It's fun to visit during one of the local festivals such as Sights of Sounds of Christmas, which is held the first weekend of December every year. Another cool thing about San Marcos is that it is only 30 miles south of Austin and about 45 miles north of San Antonio, which allows for easy day trips into the big city.
