FISHING, BEACHES, FISHING....

Written: May 10 '01 (Updated May 10 '01)
Pros:350 miles of coastline with a variety of activities
Cons:Some of the beaches are dirty brown and uninviting
The Bottom Line: The Texas Gulf Coast is a fisherman's paradise as well as a fine destination for the family vacation.

I have lived at the Texas coast now for 15 years. Many times I have traveled the 350 mile stretch of coastline to visit the coastal towns and cities. Many barrier islands, wildlife sanctuaries and unspoiled landscapes scatter the coastal area but there are also seaside cities and small towns full of activities for young and old alike.

The Texas Gulf Coast is a fisherman's paradise whether it be deep-sea fishing, bay or surf fishing, the opportunities are endless. Seaside resorts such as South Padre Island are the center focus at spring-break and there is plenty of good eating, nightlife in cities such as Beaumont and Brownsville.

Some of the following are my favorite spots along the Texas Gulf Coast:

GALVESTON: A place close to my heart as I live just outside of this barrier island city. Galveston has lots to offer the family vacationer. There are many beach houses for rent here, a great way to accommodate your family. Camp sites, large and small hotels or motels are all available. The island is full of activities for the family, such as, Moody Gardens (a set of three pyramids including aquarium, rain forest and NASA exhibition). The Strand could the historical part of your vacation with a chance to view many stately houses and shops. Lots of beaches and if you take a ferry ride to Bolivar, you will be sure to find a nice secluded spot if you want some peace.

PORT ARANSAS: Port Aransas is across from Corpus Christie located on an 18 mile barrier island. This small city is the state headquarters for the deep-sea fisherman.
Many, many charters leave daily for a fishing trip you will never forget. An average of about $60 will take you out for the morning and very rarely will you return empty handed. When my husband went, he brought back three large coolers full of fish.

FREEPORT: Freeport has several boat ramps, small fishing marinas and windsurfing. Freeport was appealing to me with it's friendly atmosphere and family-oriented activities-a typical seaside town. No nightlife here, just a laid back, lazy vacation.

PADRE ISLAND: North Padre Island is the longest remaining undeveloped barrier island in the world. Aransas Pass is the northern gateway to this nature filled barren and sometimes desolate piece of Texas. If it is solitude you want, you can mark a spot on a beach here and not see anyone else all day. The beaches are clean here backed by many large dunes. The waves are usually high and rip tides are a threat sometimes. Great for the nature lover and a quiet time.

SOUTH PADRE ISLAND: South Padre Island, the southern tip of this barrier island is the center for spring breakers, honeymooners and, you got it, deep sea fishermen. Large hotel resorts line the seafront with their large pools, jacuzzis and tennis courts. This is a fun island for the young. Not much nightlife but a great holiday atmosphere.

CORPUS CHRISTIE: The sparkling city by the sea, Corpus excels in quality nightlife, eateries and history. It is a large city with a small-town atmosphere and the beaches are only a step away.

The Texas Gulf Coast is not for everyone. The humidity here in the summer is high and days can be very hot and sticky. However, if you are a beach goer, this should not bother you if you take a frequent dip.

For the fisherman, this area has everything to offer and more. Yes, fishing is at the forefront but the beaches are a plenty and it is a great place to be in the summer.
