Milwaukee is a friendly place to visit with many things to do.
Milwaukee is situated on Lake Michigan. Right on the lake front, development is prohibited, so the entire lakefront from downtown to the start of the northern suburbs is parks and beaches. It's the perfect place to spend a sunny afternoon walking or roller blading.
Downtown is small for a city this size. It mostly consists of commercial building, although more recently the downtown area has started to become more revitalized and the increase downtown nightlife is evident. Water Street is a popular strip of bars and restaurants situated on the Milwaukee River, which winds through downtown. Boaters often dock their boats on public docks and grab a bite to eat.
It has been said that it's "20 minutes to anywhere" in Milwaukee. This is pretty much true (except during weekday rush hours), because of the efficient Interstate system into and out of the city in all directions. The city is served by General Mitchell International Airport (MKE), and is only about an hour and fifteen minutes north of Chicago's O'Hare International Airport (ORD).
Downtown Milwaukee features the Public Museum (a natural history museum) featuring an IMAX theatre), Grand Avenue Mall, Midwest Express Convention Center, Wisconsin Center, Performing Arts Center, Pabst Mansion, and Bradley Center (home to the NBA's Bucks, Indoor soccer's Wave, and IHL's Admirals). Outside of downtown are Milwaukee County Stadium (soon to be old home of MLB's Brewers) and soon-to-be completed Miller Park. The Milwaukee County Zoo is a world known zoo.
The East Side of Milwaukee is an eclectic mix of students and long-time residents. It has a great mix of restaurants, coffee houses, bars, and other eateries and small music clubs.
Of course, Milwaukee is most famous for it's beer and breweries. Miller Brewing Company gives tours of its brewery, as does Linenkugel, Sprecher, and other smaller breweries in the area.
I would recommend visiting in the summer or fall, since winters are very cold compared to most parts of the country, and spring weather is highly unpredictable.
