Pros: We'll get to watch the ball in Times Square drop an hour early.
Cons: If flights out are messed up, we'll be stuck there.

Years ago, my family made a pact to be together for this upcoming New Years eve and to greet the millennium dawn at my parents' home in rural Wisconsin. I've since wavered back and forth on this plan, worried that I'd regret not being in NYC, Times Square, Y2K Central. As 1999 wore on, though, I became more and more convinced that Wisconsin is, in fact, the place to be.
The Red Cross recommends a modest stockpile of goods in preparation for any Y2K mishaps. Water, for example. Two gallons per person per day. I'll let you in on a little secret here: The typical NYC apartment doesn't have room to store that much bottled water. But in Wisconsin? No problem! One word: Snow.
My mother, in her Martha-in-Dairyland style, has enough candles lying around to get us through mid-February. And they smell nice, too. Potpourri, vanilla, rose… all the more pleasant as we light our way out to the back 40 to chop some more wood for the fireplace.
Canned goods? Please. Midwesterners live on canned goods. Blankets and warm clothing? Well, it is Wisconsin, after all. Entertainment? Board games a-go-go. (And cow-tipping, of course.)
My concerns are few regarding looting or violence, as well - because it's just not neighborly!
This New Years' Eve is one night I'd really rather not be a New Yorker, thanks. Sure, I'll be bringing along a few supplies of my own - a bottle or two of Veuve Cliquot with which to toast the new year, some Ghirardelli cocoa to warm up the next morning - but Wisconsin is where I'll be very happy to be celebrating.
Hey, dad! Where is the snowmobile key?
