================
When Disneyland opened in 1955, Disneyland sold tickets in a coupon book. You may have heard the term, "E-ticket ride". The "E" ticket ride was your typical thrill ride. In those days it was the Matterhorn, Haunted Mansion or Pirates of the Caribbean. The coupon book system was a hassle in that each guest had to tear out a coupon and had it to a ride employee. This system was a waste if you did not use the entire booklet of tickets. If you wanted to ride a certain ride more than once, you had to buy another ticket outside the ride for about 50 cents each.
To further attract and boost attendance to the Magic Kingdom, Disneyland developed the Annual Passport™. This Annual Passport is available for Disneyland, California Adventure and Walt Disney World. Passports purchased for Disneyland cannot be used at Walt Disney World, Tokyo Disneyland or Euro-Disneyland and vice versa.

PURCHASING YOUR ANNUAL PASSPORT
After you park your car in Disneyland's new parking structure, save the parking ticket receipt indicating you paid $7.00 (more on this later). Make sure you make a note where you parked your car. The parking structure holds some 10,000 vehicles and believe me you will get lost if you do not note where you parked. Each section of the parking lot is color coded and named. As an example, you will see signs on the structural supports that will have names like Timon A-Z. If you parked on Timon between G and I, take note of the section and floor you were on.
You will then head for the tram loading area. The tram runs every three minutes during peak periods. The tram will take you on a short journey and will drop you off in Downtown Disney. From there you will walk to your left and head to the ticket booths. At the ticket booths, inform them that you wish to purchase an Annual Passport. Disneyland accepts American Express, Mastercard, VISA or Discover Cards. American Express is the official credit card of Disneyland and will also give you further discounts inside the park's stores.
At this point, you will be given a pre-printed ticket which acts as your ticket to get inside Disneyland. Save this ticket! At the far end of Disneyland's Main Street, what was once a Carnation Ice Cream Sundae restaurant is now the Disneyland Annual Passport center. Take your entry ticket AND your parking ticket to the clerk. Your photograph will be taken and placed on a card the size of a credit card. This card will designate which passport you bought.
From now on, you can bypass the ticket booths and head straight for the turnstiles. Your card will be scanned and you will be allowed entry into the park.
STEVE'S SUGGESTIONS ON WHICH ANNUAL PASSPORT TO PURCHASE
Depending upon when and how many times you visit Disneyland, I would recommend that a family of four purchase one Premium Passport and three Southern California Passports. If you are going to use your passports every month then I would replace the latter three with Deluxe Passports. At $139.00, your annual pass will pay off if you visit the park 3.23 times or more every year. It doesn't make sense for a family to buy four premium passports unless each of you visits Disneyland separately.
California Adventure,, Disneyland's newest sister, is alluring to children aged 7-18. Unfortunately, limited attractions for younger children and space allocations limited Walt Disney from developing more attractions for this new theme park.
Due to the state of the economy in southern California, Disneyland is promoting two for the price of one tickets for California Adventure and Disneyland park. Personally, although I have the 2-Park annual passport, I would highly recommend purchasing this dual passport only if you are going to visit California Adventure with your family at least four times a year.
LEAVING DISNEYLAND TEMPORARILY
I always leave the park to eat at the Disneyland Hotel across the street. When you disembark the Monorail, make sure you have your have your hand stamped to allow re-entry into the park. You will need to show your stamped hand and your annual passport for re-entry.
CHEATING THE SYSTEM
I know some of you are thinking of ways to avoid spending too much money on the passports. Most common ways are to "borrow" a friend's passport or to buy resident special tickets to take advantage of the steep discounts offered to southern California residents. Firstly, Disneyland employees do look at the photos to make sure they match the guest. If you are caught, they will confiscate the card and revoke the owners privileges. I have seen this happen.
During off peak periods of the year, Disneyland offers special discounts to southern California residents that do not have passports. In these cases, the guest(s) must provide a valid drivers license as proof of residency. Passport holders cannot buy these tickets for their guests.
SPECIAL NOTES ABOUT THE PASSPORT
If you should loose your passport, a replacement fee of $25 will be charged. You must notify Disneyland of the loss. Go to the ticket booth and tell them you lost your passport and wish to get a replacement. After you pay the replacement fee, head to the Annual Passport center to have your new photo taken or use your old photo they have on file.
The actual passport holder must be present to take advantage of all discounts or privileges.
STEVE'S RECOMMENDATION ON WHEN TO VISIT DISNEYLAND
Once you are a Disneyland Resort Annual Passport holder, I highly suggest you purchase your guest's tickets prior to arrival. Using this approach, you will avoid the long ticket lines at the entrance. With your tickets in hand, all you have to do is walk directly to the park gates!
Avoid the holidays and holiday weekends if you can. These are the most busiest periods for the park. Thanksgiving and Christmas is the definitely not the time to visit Disneyland.
If you must make your visit during these times, try to make your visit on a Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday. These days are typically Disneyland's least busiest period.
