| klueger's Full Review: Idlewild Park |
Ildewild park located of us Rte. 30 in Ligonier Pa, is a great place for a day of family fun. Particularly if you have children if the toddler range. We needed a day for the family to have fun together and Ildewild provided.
The gates open at 10:00 AM, but be advised storybook forest and the picnic area's are about all you will be able to use until 11:00 AM. Also a little update on the price it is now 18.95$ a ticket. The admission is free for children under 2. However, it is easy to find coupons for discounts, if you drink Pepsi products in the Pittsburgh region many cans come with coupons on them.
We started the day with storybook forest since we parked in parking lot A which is located right by storybook forest. This is great for the young kids to go through, and see the nursery rymes they love come to life. Many of the attractions have people dressed up and giving various treats to the kids. For instance, on the goodship lolipop the pirate tells the kids to look for the treasure. A box of lolipops (what else could it be). It's not hard to find, but the kids have fun doing it. My five year-old had a lot of fun though he kept asking for snow white who is close to the end. We reached heaven when he met Snow White.
After you leave Storybook Forest you enter the jungle zone which contains a lot of interesting stuff that the family can enjoy together. It contains on of the biggest ball pits I have ever seen. Extremely popular with the kids. Also, a huge net to climb up and slides just a lot of fun all around. A must stop for the entire family.
Once you get into the main part of the park you have the game and food area. Do yourself a favor pack a picnic lunch. The food is pricey and really does not taste that good. If you have been to Kennywood and have had the potato Patchs' fries, don't get the fries at Idlewilds' Potato Patch. They where extremely expensive and not completely cooked. That was probably the biggest disappointment of the day.
When you go over the bridge to Mister Rogers Neighborhood and Raccoon Lagoon you enter a no smoking section because it's the little kids section. (I applaud the park for this). The trolley ride through Make Believe land is a must if you have little ones. I really enjoyed it myself and can't wait to come along come along to a hug and song party again. Also in this section for a extra 3.50$ you can have your little on ride on pony. The pony looked to be well cared for which made me happy. The kids rides are terrific, and my son enjoyed being able to go on rides by himself. It made him feel like a big kid that he could get on rides the older kids couldn't.
The day we went the temperature reached 86 degrees so the soak zone was a welcome. I got a blast out of the raft slide the only slide we could go on because the other slides are one person slides and my son isn't quite 48 inches tall yet. They are very strick enforcing the height requirement on all rides (made for some sad moments for the little guy, but it is a good thing they really enforce the requirements). They have water guns to squirt people running through the middle and also a huge bucket that fills with water and dumps out on people this provided for a lot of fun, and really provided a cooling off.
Back to the park, I was pleasantly surprised with the Rollo Coaster. Though it is really tame it was better than I expected from it, and had fun riding it. The scrambler is fun. and for families the Parachute ride is one that families of four can ride together. It is nice to be able to ride together. The rides are tame which makes the park nice for the little ones. If your family is older kids 9 and up I don't think Idlewilde is the park for you.
They have several shows throughout the day which provide some fun entertainment. We didn't get to see them all but the puppet show (storybook forest area) was good and the show in Raccoon Lagoon provided some fun for the younger kids.
I was also please with how friendly and helpful the staff was at the Park. Also, security was very visable, but they where pleasant and enforced the rules in a nice manner.
To sum it up Idlewild is the place to go if a doctor orders a family day of fun.
