I have grown up along with Idlewild Park. My best memories of childhood stem from this magical place. I can not think of a more child and parent friendly park on earth.
Idlewild park is located in Ligonier,Pennsylvania on Route 30,East. The park has so many child friendly features and attractions I could not begin
to list them all. I will start with my personal favorites.
Storybook Forest -Operating hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
You and your children can visit storybook homes of Little Red Riding Hood,The Old Lady Who Lived In A Shoe and many other timeless favorites. The characters give out candy and serve as guides through this section of the park. The homes are all child size and friendly. Live animals are also a welcome sight. How can you tell the tail of The Three Little Pigs Without the pigs? A gift shop is also located within this section of the park. Remember to bring your camera.
Jumpin Jungle -Operating hours are 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Also a favorite for kids. This section features a tremendous ball pit and countless climbing activites. A great way for kids to spend part of their day.
Hootin Holler
A place for grown ups and older children. This section offers no rides but a bevy of culinary choices. The food is just awe inspiring. Fresh french fried potatoes with your choices of toppings. Another great option is the sit down meal atmosphere Hootin Holler provides. The entertainment in this section can not be beat. Live shows and a guided tour-do not eat before the stomach turning,dizzying tour-make this a must enjoy stop. Looking for a special gift or old fashioned photograph you have come to the right place. Sketchs and character sketches are also available here.
Olde Idlewild Rides -Operating hours are 11 a.m. to Park Closing
This is the orginal park that I grew up with. They offer all the standard park rides but the true adventure lover may be disappointed. The rides are not that scary.
H2Ohhh Zone -Operating Hours are 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.
In this section you will find numerous water slides, a large pool and kiddie pool and boat rentals. I have watched this section get more popular every year so it tends to be over crowded. Come early,then return again at the end of the day for the most fun.
Racoon Lagoon -Operating hours are 11 a.m. to Park Closing
This is the best place for little kids. All the rides are made with the youngest rider and parent in mind. The spot is shady with ample benches for tired parents.
Mister Rogers Neighborhood Of Make Believe -Operating hours are 11 a.m. to Park Closing
Located in Racoon Lagoon this is a guided train tour of the famous "Neighborhood" we all grew up with. Parents accompany children on this ride.
Believe it or not I have not touched all the park has to offer. Goofy golf,train rides,picnic areas and ample free parking are just a few more.
Idlewild offers a one price admission of 16.95. That includes all attractions except Goofy Golf and boat rentals. Senior passes are 12.00 and children under 2 are FREE. Discounts are given for groups of 25 or more-but call first.
I recommend taking more than one day to see all that this park has to offer. Next day passes are available. Camp grounds,motels and state parks are a stones throw from the park itself. This would make the perfect budget vacation for the family.
Many other attractions seperate from the park can be found close by. Fort Ligonier for civial war buffs and Jennerstown Speedway along with many Johnstown,Pa attractions like the Inclined Plane make this a perfect get a way.
