In the mood for a theme park that will entertain the entire family? Look no further than Ligonier, PA's Idlewild Park. This park is fun enough to brighten the day of even the surliest adolescent and non-offensive enough to put the sparkle in Grandpa's cataract-blue eye. Though, at $16.95 per person, it is a little pricier than it used to be, Idlewild Park is worth the trip. I go every year, and I'm not even forced to!
Idlewild's rides are mostly of the spin-around-really-fast type that will make you sick if you go on them too soon after eating. Translation: your kids will love these rides. There is also a roller coaster called the "Wild Mouse" that should probably more accurately be called the "Whiplash Express." Rumor is they keep an on-call chiropractor on this ride to pop people's spines and shoulders into place after they ride on the rickety, jarring coaster. Your kids will love this ride too.
When you get sick of going on rides, you can head over to the "Jumpin' Jungle," or as it should be called, "Lawsuit Land." Here, kids can climb on ropes, go down rickety slides, and hit other children with balls from the ball pit. You guessed it: this one is a personal favorite!
There are also live shows at Idlewild featuring local high school theater kids in hotpants performing programs such as "The History of Rock 'N Roll," which looks more like the history of gay glam-rock to me. Never fear, though, when you get sick of that you can go get something low-cost and high-calorie at one of Idlewild Park's fine eateries.
Little kids will have lots to do at Idlewild. In addition to a kiddie park filled with state-of-the-art heartstopping thrill rides, there is also a place called Storybook Forest where children can have their pictures taken with characters from popular fairy tales. Children over five will probably hate it, but believe me, for little kids it's a big deal. There is also a tour of Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood, where Mr. Rogers fans young and old can visit the make-believe land of a kindly old man with a very warped mind. This ride is also a favorite of mine.
In conclusion, Idlewild is a lovable slice of nostalgia that is fun for children and grownups of all ages. Go back to a time when lawsuits were not as important as good old-fashioned children's play and deer ticks ran free across the land. Just watch out for that rock 'n roll revue!
