When driving by a well lighted area at night near Orlando, you might think you are at Old Town. Thats not what will give it away that you are at Old Town. You''ll see the human slingshot and the bungee jumping towers. Now you definitely know that you're at Old Town!
Parking- The parking lot is quite large. The lots near the entrance of Old Town were well occupied when I went. When finally finding a spot, we had to walk a ways to all 12 entrances. As we were walking, so were many other people. However, cars kept on coming towards us, so it was not that easy to walk.
Looks, best times to visit, and size- The looks of Old Town are very different from a regular plaza. It is like a small town in the west a long time ago. That is the impression you receive. All the shops are made from steel, so are the restaurants. The best time to visit is at night. A drawback is the long lines at the restaurants on Saturday nights. However, I would rather wait in line without the hot sun blazing on me. In other words, if you go during daylight, the sun will really bother you when walking in the middle of all the shops, but there are many shaded spots around all the stores. It is usually best to go to Old Town after dinner. It is a good place to take a walk while eating ice cream for desert. I found doing that extremely relaxing. Old Town is very large. There are endless selections of shops. However, I only recall seven rides at Old Town. You will read about these rides in the next paragraph. Dont get the wrong impression. Old Town is not an amusement park. It is a pedestrian plaza with a few rides for a touch of more fun!
Rides- The GoKarts take about 15 people at a time. Therefore, the line was pretty short! To go on the GoKarts, you have to pay $5 for each driver, not person. There ware cars for one passenger, and others for two passengers. The track is in the formation of an eight. The ferris wheel is one of the first objects you see when entering. Some other objects you will see are the antique cars. There are about four or five antique cars to see. They are there to attract customers. However, this didnt attract me to Old Town. A friendly agent at my resort recommended to come to Old Town, so I did! The ferris wheel is well lighted with bright white lights, and it can hold nearly 100 people. I did not go on it, so I do not know the price. The bungee jumping looked very fun, but dangerous. It is located in the back right corner of the park. When going to the top of the poll, you wait for about two seconds. Then you drop uselessly as the thick rope swings you back and forth several times above the enormous plaza. I would never go on the human slingshot, which is the other dangerous attraction at Old Town. Two people go into a tiny white cage with tiny white seats. You are then lifted up high into the air. Then you are slingshotted out and about above the parking lot. You can hear the screams from the passengers from anywhere in the park. There is a roller coaster in back of the park that is very shaky but quite fun. It is a lot smaller than amusement park roller coasters, but it is fun and there was not a line the one time that I went on it in December 2002. I have only been on the GoKarts and the roller coaster, so I can not express my thoughts on the other rides.
Food- There are cotton candy, and popcorn stands. There are also karaoke bars. Italian, Chinese, French and Spanish diners are in the selection of restaurants. However, when I was walking through the plaza, I saw that there were lines going out the door from the cultural restaurants and the karaoke bar. Therefore, I recommend that you eat before coming to Old Town. I looked at the menus of the cultural restaurants ( Italian, Chinese, French and Spanish ). The prices are very high. At the Italian restaurant, for spaghetti and meatballs in a ziti form, was $10.99. I can not remember the names of the restaurants because the last time I visited Old Town was in April 2001.
Shopping- There are many shops at Old Town. There are gift shops, to antique shops. Gift shops are the majority of shops at Old Town. They are very small, but packed with many items. Therefore, it is hard to move around, and also the shops are quite packed. In the gift shops you will find shirts, key chains, and hats. On these items, you can find pictures of Disney characters, along with the words "Orlando" or "Florida". Also, you will find inappropriate sayings. I do not wish to name some of the sayings, because they usually involve bad language, or sexual thoughts. In the antique shops, you will find framed pictures of old Disney characters, old car models, jewelry and dishware. The gift shops have pretty cheap items, but the antique shops have expensive items with the highest quality, unlike the gift shops.
Why go to Old Town?- I recommend Old Town to people 12 and over. Young children might find it boring, and there is also the issue about the inappropriate shirts. There are rides which are almost always fun for adrenaline junkies. I think they would favor the bungee jumping, and the human slingshot. If you just wanted to go for a relaxing walk, this is a good place for it. There is music playing in the town, but it comes from small speakers throughout the plaza. Sometimes, there will be bands that are not that well known there. If you are looking to have a good time, try going on the rides, or do some karaoke! I would like to try that! Or if you just wanted to go out for dinner, there are many selections of unique restaurants available. Even if you are just board in Orlando ( unlikely ), take a short car ride to Old Town. There is no fee to enter the plaza, and parking is free! That is one of the most unique features about Old Town. It is very hard to go somewhere in Orlando for free in my opinion. And for all you shoppers, Old Town has you covered with shirt selections, and those classy key chains along with that fancy jewelry!
Overall- Old Town is a pretty good place to be. There are many selections of things to do. Even though Old Town is not that exciting without risking your life at bungee jumping or being a human slingshot, you will find something to do in Old Town, Orlando!
