I have visited Kings Island four times over this and last summer and am very disappointed with what I've encountered. Below is a brief summary.
CLEANLINESS
Although the grounds of the park were fairly clean, THE RESTROOMS WERE ATROCIOUS!! With thousands of people visiting the park daily and the employees that handle/prepare food using these same filthy bathrooms, its a health hazard waiting to happen. After last years visit I wrote to the Parks guest relations people about the terrible condition of the restrooms. Although I received a stock response (We have employees who regularly check on the bathrooms), things were even worse this year. This is an area that needs to be addressed by the Kings Island management.
PARK EMPLOYEES
In general, the employees were friendly but there just werent enough of them. There were very long lines at the concession stands (especially in the water park). This is another example of cluelessness on the part of the management.
OVERALL EXPERIENCE
First, if you havent purchased your tickets in advanced, be prepared to stand in line at the ticket counter for up to 30 minutes.
Second, if you have children, be prepared for them to acquire an enhanced vocabulary after visiting Kings Island. Obscene t-shirts are allowed and are numerous. It speaks volumes about the quality of visitors to the Park.
Third, if youre going to the water park, expect to change into your swimsuit in a dirty, hot, and cramped changing room (and to wait in line to do so). The day I was there it was 90+ degrees and the water park concession stands ran out of bottled water. Another issue to chalk up to poor management.
Fourth, DO NOT eat in any of the large eating areas such as the Picnic Grove (Backyard BBQ) or the Festhaus. I ate at the Festhaus and it was dirty and had poor service. Someone spilled a drink on the floor and even upon being notified of the situation it took Park employees 20 minutes to address the issue. Bring your own snacks and grab a slice of pizza or a hot dog and TRY to find a clean place to eat it.
Lastly, dont expect a real upscale experience at Kings Island. One gets the feeling that the managements goal is to do the absolute minimum that is necessary to allow them to keep the Park open and charge admission. The rides arent great, the water park has a grungy feel to it, the overall quality of the visitors is questionable (one ticket price for the water park and the amusement park seems to attract an interesting crowd), the restrooms are filthy, and the lines are long.
The Park has potential, but theres no indication that even with the change in management to Cedar Fair any measurable effort will be made to improve the number/quality of the rides, the cleanliness, or the Parks guest code of conduct policy.
My advice is to stay clear of Kings Island until the management decides to upgrade it.
