Playland is a great place to spend the day at a smaller amusement park. There is a lot to do: go to the beach or pool, bbq and picnic on the grounds, play miniature golf, go on a boat ride, enjoy free weekly entertainment in the summer along with a great fireworks show at night... and of course get on the rides!
Unlike many of the amusement parks in the tri-state area, Playland has free admission, but you will pay for parking along with the fact that you must purchase tickets to get on every ride. Each ride can cost you between 2-4 tickets. You can purchase these tickets individually at $1.25 each or buy a booklet for $21.00 for 24 tickets. Some may think this can be very costly, but at least you are in control of exactly what you spend on each ride you get on, as opposed to other parks that charge a flat fee that sometimes can only get you on less than 6 major rides in a day if you are lucky. There is a fee to enter the pool or go the the beach but both are less than $5.00 per person, and there are discounts for both seniors and children as well. You will also pay $3.25 per person if you want to play a round of miniature golf and there is also a boat ride along the lake that last about 15 minutes and that too is $3.00 per person. A quick note : There are no metal detectors at Playland and there is a small staff of security officers along with a law enforcement office. Despite this in today's times, I felt very safe and secure at Playland.
The rides at Playland for the most part are nostalgic of many older rides, but are just as fun. There is something for everyone, including a great area for younger children that is not overwhelming. There is of course the famous Dragon Coaster, made more famous these days by Mariah Carey in her video for "Fantasy". This ride may not be the supercoasters that many of us are used to today, but believe me, this coaster still stands the test of time. It is also a great beginner coaster for a newbie, or for those out there who are terrified of those "giant beast" at the other parks :)
There are other rides that will spin you, pick you up, and whip you around in all kinds of directions. You will also find several indoor rides that are air conditioned for your comfort such as the House of Mirrors, along with 2 haunted houses. There are even 2 flume and log rides that will cool you off on those hot summer days too.
In my opinion, the best way to enjoy a day a Playland with your family is to arrive very early to get a good spot at the picnic area so that you can bring your own food and bbq. This is a first come- first served basis only. Just remember that you can only bbq with Playland's equipment and not your own. Spend the morning by the beach or take a dip in the pool. Later you can walk along their boardwalk that boast many games along with gift shops as well. Get on some rides, enjoy the fact that if you want to get on every ride you want, chances are that you will. Play some miniature golf. Relax and enjoy the free entertainment by both up and coming artist along with established singers as well. Honestly, one can get on all the rides and be done before 3p.m., but the point is to take your time and don't rush. Trust me, extending your day will be well worth it, especially after you stay for the fireworks which start a 9:15 p.m.
Compare this day to other days spent at other amusement parks : ridiculous entrance fees, high parking fees, long lines just to get in, very expensive food and drinks, 2-3 hours waits for just one ride, crowded parks, endless walking to and from each ride, disappointment that certain rides are shut down, horrible rain check policies, the knowledge that you will not get to do everything in one day, the fact that at the end of the day you feel like you have been "mugged", I mean the list goes on and on...
I love going to amusement parks. I will get on any and every ride I can. I have spent many years going and spent A LOT of money just to get on those rides. I am sure you have too. If you want to go to an amusement park but are just plain tired of the money spent and tired of the hassle of waiting on lines for hours on end, spend the day at Playland. Not only is this a great park for families with younger children, but this park is great for couples on dates as well. That is how I spent my first visit at Playland.
I'm sure that no matter who you go with, your sweetheart or your children, Playland will be a place that you will continue to go to year after year.
Check their website ryeplayland.org for directions from the tri-state area, a quick review of each ride, schedules for entertainment days, and a review of all the different activities I have mentioned in this review. This is especially helpful if you want to spend the day there with your family and want to plan out your activities. If you live in NY and don't want to drive up, you can take Metro North along with a short bus ride to the park. This takes less than an hour from the Bronx and when you buy roundtrip train tickets, you can also receive a discount of a book of tickets as well.
I highly recommend Playland to those who want a good time without feeling like they have been "jipped" by long lines, overinflated prices, and limited access to the more popular rides at all the other parks.
