I recently made a trip to Universal Studios with my three children 5,3 and 1. I have been to Universal Studios before but found there wasn't much to do for the children because of there ages. Now they have finally improved the park for this age range. We went in July on a weekday around 11am. It was not too crowded and the lines were pretty minimal.
We visited Fievel's Playland first. It was great with one exception. There are two entrances to the playland. The entrances are right near each other but if you are the only adult with more than one child you have to watch carefully. There is climbing and slides and a water ride for adults and children in it.
Next we moved to Woody Woodpecker Zone. There is a rollercoaster for the kids to ride. The 1 year old was too small to ride but the other two could ride it. They loved it I must say.
There is also a water area for kids and adults. BE PREPARED TO GET SOAKED. The water area has only one entrance/exit so you can turn the kids loose and sit by the entrance/exit and relax while they play. You could do like me and get right in the middle of the fun as well. There are attendants at the entrance so if a child walks out alone they make sure that parent is found before they let the child wander off. The water area is a two story hollowed out building that has guns on the top floor to shoot water at people below. There are tons of levers and buttons to press that shoot water out at different places. It was very easy for the kids to operate. There is a ball area that has foam balls that you can shoot at people from the top floor as well.
Next we moved to the Barney show. It seemed short even to the kids but after the show they bring the characters out for photos and autographs. After the show you are sent to a Barney play area that is very educational as well as fun.
All of that amounted to a full 6 hours of fun for me and the kids. There are bathrooms in the area so you don't have to go far to find them. The bathrooms were very clean and well kept. There are many drink stands around that sell soda, water, lemonade, and icees so there was something for all of us. When you leave the childrens area there is a restaurant that serves hotdog and french fries, a must for all children it seems.
Here are some tips if you are going for the whole day.
#1 Get a double stroller the kids will not want to walk back to the parking garage when the day is over. If you rent a stroller don't drop it off at the place where you rented it take it all the way to the parking garage. They don't tell you this but many people do it and it makes life much easier and you won't get in trouble for it. Maybe someday they will realize that they need a stroller drop off place closer to the parking garage.
#2 Bring an extra set of clothes and a plastic bag to put the wet clothes in. Bathing suits are very helpful for adults and children and don't feel that you will be the only one in a bathing suit.
#3 Bring the money. If you are going to eat in the park it will cost you. Unfortunately leaving the park to eat somewhere else is a major undertaking. We ate at the above mentioned hotdog restaurant and it cost $28.00. That was for three hotdog w/fries and one sausage w/peppers and onions w/fries and three sodas and one milk. The food was good and plentiful. You will also need to buy drinks thru-out the day if you go during the summer.
#4 Wear some good walking shoes. It is a 15 minutes walk from the parking garage to the entrance of Universal Studios. I am not kidding. I worked at the Hard Rock Cafe there and made that walk everyday. 15 minutes if you walk at a normal pace.
#5 SUNBLOCK FOR ALL. REPEAT OFTEN.
