Islands of Adventure is a brand new theme park next door to Universal Studios. My husband and I have annual passes to both parks and highly recommend Islands instead of Universal.
Islands of Adventure is said to be the theme park of the 21st century.
The attractions here are state of the art and for the most part unique. The park is separated into "Islands", there is a Marvel Comics island, a comic strip island, a Jurassic Park island, a lost continent island, and a Dr. Suess island.
The Marvel Comics section contains three of the best rides in the park. First there's The Incredible Hulk rollercoaster, what sets this coaster apart from all others is that the lift hill actually launches you up at 40 miles an hour, it's awesome. Secondly, there's Dr. Dooms Fearfall. This is the only "off the shelf" ride in the park. It's an ordinary free fall that can be found at any park, but, it's a lot of fun. Last but not least is Spiderman. Spiderman is a new ride that has become the new top of the line attraction. This ride includes a simulator type car that moves through a building that covers over an acre of land. The car moves through the building and stops at 3-D movie screens along the way showing spiderman battling his enemies trying to save the world. This ride leaves you breathless, it's amazing.
The comic strip area is called "Toon Lagoon". It is wonderfully themed around newspaper comic strips. The rides here include a white water rafting ride themed around popeye and a Dudley Do Right flume ride. Both are entertaining and wet.
The Jurassic Park island is just like walking into the movie. The ride "Jurassic Park" could be better, but, it has a great drop at the end. My favorite part about this area is the landscaping, it's just beautiful. There is also a great play area themed around mountains, waterfalls and dinosaurs. What else could kids want.
The Lost Continent holds "Dueling Dragons". Dueling Dragons is two separate rollercoasters that almost crash three times during the ride. To get the full affect of this I suggest you wait to sit in the front row. The Lost Continent also has two shows, a Sinbad stunt show and a special effects show. I haven't been to see these shows yet because the lines are always really long and my friends tell me that their not worth the wait. But I will see them myself someday.
The last island is themed around Dr. Suess. It's brilliantly done and does justice to the genius of Suess. There's a merry-go-round, a play area., a One Fish, Two Fish ride and a great Cat in the Hat ride. My son loves this island, it's a good place to let him run around and get out some energy.
In summary I Highly Recommend Islands of Adventure. The overall themeing is excellent and the ride quality is very good.
Islands is so much better than Universal that when my family and I bought our annual passes we found out that Universal won't even sell a pass to just Islands. They sell passes to just Universal Studios but not to just Islands of Adventure, we had to buy passes to both, that tells me that they know Islands is a better park and are afraid that people won't buy passes to the studio if they don't have to.
The only con I can think of at Islands is the price of food and drink. I expect to pay a little bit more for these things at theme parks, but Universal charges more than usual.
