Where movies become reality

Written: Jan 05 '01
Pros:Great entertainment for children
Cons:Height restrictions on some rides and a lot of walking and waiting

I just visited Universal Studio's Hollywood and I found it much different from when I first attended, which was almost ten years ago. They have some new attractions plus additional sightings. Universal is not like any other theme park, it's a park that focuses on movie productions and lets the customer experience what it's like being in the movie with the aid of three dimension and Imax theatres.

Before entering the park there is a Hollywood walkway that have a bunch of stores and fast food places. The fast foods outside of Universals are much cheaper than inside the park and have some great food stands such as the famous Tommy burgers. There's also an ice rink near the far end of the walkway. Once you enter the park the admission is 43 dollars or 37 for Seniors and children. If you have the entertainment book they allow you 8 dollars off adult fair or if you have an AAA membership you get three dollars off.

Some of the rides at universal are, Back to the future, terminator, the tram ride, ET, backdraft, and the new attraction Jurassic Park. During the time I went there was Grinchmas. Not only does this theme park have rides but the have very entertaining shows such as, animal show, rugrats, waterworld, and wild wild west.

Back to the future is a simulator where your in a big Imax theatre and get to experience the thrills of going back into time. The terminator is a three dimensional ride where you have to destroy all the cyborgs with the aid of the terminator. ET is an old ride where you have to help ET get home by riding the bicycle and help return ET. Backdraft you learn what a backdraft basically is, which is when there is no more oxygen in a concealed room and once there's an opening with a new batch of oxygen the fire rushes towards it creating a huge explosion. The new ride that I've never experience was Jurassic Park which is a water ride. I didn't know about this until I was half way in line when I saw everyone wearing a "poncho" which is a protective raingear that you can purchase for 25 cents prior to entering the ride. I find this the best ride by far but when I went on it, it was during the night and I got really wet and cold. The tram ride was also one of my favorite rides. On this ride you experience visiting King Kong, Jaws and see how they film some of the famous Hollywood movies such as Frankenstein. They show you some famous streets and the techniques they use when filming.

The shows provided at Universals were very entertaining, my favorite being waterworld. This show is evolved in a water area where audience members have the option of sitting in a wet-zone. They use pyrotechnics to help enhance the shows performance and make it very realistic. Another great show is the animal show where they have all types of animals from a small mouse to a giant pig all performing tricks.

Overall the park is great especially for younger audience. My brother and I found the park to childish and there was a lot of walking. The waiting lines for each ride varies from approximately thirty minutes to about an hour. The total cost of our visit to the park was 35 entrance fee each and 15 dollars each for food. We visited the park from the morning and stayed their until it closed. So we spend about 100 dollars for the days worth.
