| Dosite1's Full Review: Audubon Institute Aquarium of the Americas |
You get to "New Awlins", you want to entertain the kids, and maybe get a couple of cocktails, where you "gonna" go? You're going to the Aquarium of the Americas conveniently located next to the Quarter, and within walking distance of the Harrah's casino.
The Aquarium of the Americas could be one of the top Aquariums in the world. It houses the largest collection of Jellyfish displayed anywhere in the country. They got sharks of all sorts and sizes. When you first enter, you walk through a tunnel that puts fish all around you. Sharks swim overhead. As you progress through the exhibit, you will have the opportunity to see Flashlight Fish, a favorite of mine because they blink lights at each other, and even penguins playing. There is a large tank set up to show how man and nature interact positively when a large drilling platform is set up (yeah right) and all the gulf creatures accept it and adopt the platform as a new home.
The Rainforest area has examples of how Cajuns adapted to their new environment when they were kicked out of Canada. You can see all of the critters that they turned into breakfast, lunch and dinner. We love to spend time with the albino Alligators that are also displayed.
It is possible to move through the Aquarium of the Americas in about two hours, but you may stay longer if you stop for drinks at the bar.(That is so New Orleans) It really is a neat place, I can spend hours in there, but I love fish. I suggest that you consider purchasing a combo package that includes a round trip cruise to the Audubon Zoo for $28.50. If you like, you can make a day of it, and throw in the IMAX too for $46.00.
