| Guildencrantz's Full Review: Audubon Institute Aquarium of the Americas |
Yes, people eat alligator here; well, not in the aquarium, but in the city they do. As a matter of fact I like alligator meat, but that is beside the point. The point is that if you would like to take some time and look at the aquatic animals of the Mississippi River and Gulf of Mexico then you should take a trip to the Aquarium of the Americas.
This aquarium is very nice. It is actually one of the most beautifully done aquariums I have ever been to. There are HUGE tanks of fish that people just sit in front of for long periods of time. There are also smaller tanks with specific examples of the situations that you will find in the bayou or in the rivers, and these are the best parts.
These specific little examples are found in the specific portion of the aquarium dedicated to the Mississippi River habitats and the bayou. These specific regions give a real feel with well decorated rooms around the various tanks.
The rest of the aquarium is full of tanks featuring fish from the gulf in a very nice, but not highly decorated, environment. There are also numerous exhibits discussing different marine related phenomenon like the erosion of materials left in the sea.
While this aquarium does focus on the Gulf of Mexico and the Mississippi, with tons of different kinds of jelly fish on exhibit, there is also a penguin exhibit. An otter exhibit has also been added, but that was quite recently and I have not been to the aquarium in almost a year.
My one real complaint about the aquarium is the cost. For about twelve dollars you get into the aquarium, but it only takes a few hours to get through it. For about eight dollars you could go to the Audobon Zoo and spend the whole day with the animals. But the aquarium is very nice and a great place to go.
The aquarium also packages deals with the zoo and the attached IMAX theater. You can even buy a package with for the zoo, aquarium, and a boat ride between the two up the Mississippi. A movie at the IMAX can be added to that package as well.
