Rated as one of the "Top Ten Children's Museums" by, Your Family and Parenting, the Louisiana Children's Museum in New Orleans, completed a $2.8 million expansion and grand re-opening to families in 994.
Highlights are, the transformation of the first floor to "The Lab," a math and physics lab; "Body Works," a Children's Hospital-sponsored exhibit on physical fitness; "The Times-Picayune Theater," which seats 200 people and will host culturally diverse performances, plus films, plays, puppet shows and demonstrations; and "Challenges," sponsored by Tulane University Medical Center.
Visitors are able to simulate loss of hearing, sight or movement, through the use of headsets, non-sight goggles and wheelchairs and then are challenged to perform daily tasks.
The new exhibits are an important addition to the existing simulated television studio, where children can be "star anchors;" a mini-supermarket with real cash registers, carts, bakery, deli and produce sections; a tugboat children can captain and onto which they can load sacks of coffee into a cargo net; a play scape for 1- to three-year-olds; an exhibit promoting bus, bike and pedestrian safety, that includes a real car and police motorcycle; a French Quarter setting from the mid-1800s; a waterworks display which allows children to build dams; a shadow trap, where children can strike a pose and then walk away from the shadow; and a Cajun cottage where kids can "play Cajun."
