Yes, it is true! Today in the children's part of the Bronx, a rather large llama whom I was feeding, was upset that I wasn't feeding him fast enough! So, he took the contents of his mouth, and spit on myself and about 6 other people! It was hysterical, and I wasn't harmed! Well, now that I have gotten that antidote out of the way.....On with the review!
The Bronx Zoo, located in New York City, is one of the largest zoos in the world. My very first experience with the Bronx Zoo occurred at the ripe old age of 2! Twenty Five years, and countless school trips later, I have donned myself a local expert on the Bronx Zoo. When is the best time to go? When is the worst? Is this zoo REALLY kid friendly? These questions, and more, I will try to answer with all of my expertise!
The Bronx Zoo is easily accesible by bus, car, and New York City subway. The majority of the zoo is wheelchair accesible. Their are one or two major stairways though that do not have ramps. If this problem was fixed, the zoo would be perfect.....almost!
Now don't get me wrong, I love the Bronx Zoo, I really do. There is one major flaw though, that I cannot get over. That would be the cost. Not the cost of the admission. At $9.00 for adults, and $5.00 for children, I guess that is the norm. Now, add up the cost of food, added attractions, and souvinors, and your going bankrupt!
There are many, many wonderful attractions that put the Bronx Zoo at the top of must see places in New York. Below is a list of the favorites....
The World Of Birds...is located in the northeast corner of the zoo. The zoo is over 265 acres by the way, so wear comfortable shoes! This three level building houses over 200 different species of bird, including a jungle full of birds that fly right over your head! This is definently one of the highlights of the park, you don't want to miss it!
The Sea Bird Colony, and The Aquatic Bird House.....are similier to the World of Birds. These are very large outdoor cages with numerous species of birds, they will eat out of your hand!
The Monkey House, World Of Reptiles, and Jungle World are also great sights to see at the Zoo. They basically speak for themselves!
Now the attractions I am going to list below are all great in their own right. The problem is that they all cost extra money to get into! The attractions range from 50 cents to $3.00 per person. It doesn't seem like much, but after 3 or 4 attractions with 4 people in your group, it really adds up!
The Butterfly Zone, located in the heart of the Zoo, is breathtaking! With over 400 different types of butterflys over you, it is truly paradise. Once again, the down side of $2.00 per person.
The Children's Zoo, also $2.00 per person, is an attraction not to miss! This zoo within a zoo has hands on exhibits, a petting zoo, and shows every hour. For $5.00, your little one can take a picture with a bunny rabbit. I'm cheap, and it wasn't happening today. My husband did get wonderful pictures of the "llama spitting incident" though......
The Congo.....was always one of my favorite attractions. Seeing gorillas up close and being able to ride an elephant was always tops on my list. I wouldn't know if they have improved on the Congo this year, for they have begun charging $3.00 per person! Once again, I'm cheap, and it wasn't happening!
The Sky Safari, and the Zoo Shuttle get you around the park, for $2.00 per person! I think that you know the drill!
All in all, there are wonderul things too see at the park. Just please, Lord almighty please, do not go to the Zoo on Wednesday's! Wednesday's, admittance to the Zoo is free, so the crowds commeth! Youth groups of 20 kids or more come on Wednesday, , senior groups come on Wednesdays, just everyone! The Zoo is so very crowded! It is a large Zoo, but it still gets to the point that you cannot walk! The zoo is open 7 days a week. So, if your going to spend money on the parking, food, and added attractions, don't stop there! Pay for the admission on another day besides Wednesday! Of couse, I am cheap......
********Just a note. All due respect does go out to the hundreds of employees and volunteers who give tireless hours to the zoo. They keep the zoo as immaculate as a zoo can be. Their pay is low, and all of the money earned from the gift shops, concession stands, and added attractions goes directly towards the zoo, and to wildlife conservation!*********
