| ezreka's Full Review: Cheyenne Mountain Zoo |
Recently I took a trip to Colorado Springs to visit my mother, my aunt & uncle and my two young cousins. I was sick the whole time! Since I was sick we did not do much, but my mother thought it would be a great idea to go to the zoo. I am glad I went.
When we entered the zoo there was a snack bar and gift shop first. I was hungry because I missed breakfast and my cousin had to use the bathroom so we went in. There are many gifts to choose from; shirts, stuffed animals and many more. The gifts were of course very expensive! My cousin and I made our way to the bathroom first. There were three very small stales in there and not much room to wash our hands. After using the bathroom, I made my way to the snack bar. There was a lot of food to choose from. From sandwiches to salads and nachos to ice cream. I decided to get the nachos because they were the least expensive (I don't remember exactly, but I believe they were $1.50). My cousin and oldest daughter wanted ice cream (I remember the price of that $2.13!). My nachos were just plain chips with a cheese sauce on the side and the ice cream was just like those you would get from the ice cream truck (for a lot less).
Finally on to the animals! After leaving the snack shop we had to walk up hill to the giraffes. Let me tell you it is hard pushing a stroller up hill! We then followed the sign to get to the elephants, but you had to go through a building that was closed so we had to turn around. After walking up hill some more we finally got to see the elephants and we saw a baby elephant. Walking up hill even more we got to the camel ride (I believe it was $3 to ride). When we got there I was so wore out (because I was sick), we decided to take the tram. Before I get to the tram ride I want to mention the benches. The benches were works of art and shaped like animals.
The Tram
The Tram is a dollar per person to ride all day. They stamp your hand so that they know who has paid. I don't know if it is common, but the driver let my baby ride for free. The tram takes you all around the zoo and makes frequent stops. The driver will tell you about all the sites at each of the stops. We rode completely around one time and then got off at the Asian Highlands.
The Asian Highlands
Asian highlands is just a walkway to different things. The fist thing we saw was The Bird and Reptile house witch is a room with different birds, snakes, and monkeys. There was also some scorpions! When we were there we got to see a baby monkey and he was so cute. There was a sign that said to look closely for him because he might be on one of his parents backs. At the end of the room right before you leave is a pond with little turtles in it. Then we went down a hill called Birds of prey hill and saw many other exotic birds. I thought the best one was the one that looks like the bird in the Bugs Bunny cartoons "witch way did he go witch way did he go" (sorry, I don't know the technical name). Then we were on our way to Wolf Woods.
Wolf Woods
When you first enter this part of the zoo there is a sign that says to "be quiet". The wolves are kept behind a glass were we can see them, but they cannot see us. The reason for this is so that they might be released back in the wild someday. We got to see to wolves pacing back and forth. As we are leaving this area there is a man made cave for the children to crawl in. My daughter got a kick out of it. After that we went to the Butterfly Garden.
The Butterfly Garden
This was a rather small garden for the butterfly's. It was pretty though. On the day we were there, there were not many butterfly's! There is also a playground called My Big Backyard for the children. But, it was under construction so we could not take advantage of it. After that we decided to go see the Will Rogers Shrine.
The Shrine
To get to the shrine you have to drive though the zoo. The posted speed limit in the zoo is 5 MPH and you have to put your hazard lights on. Going up to the Shrine is awesome! You can see the whole city. Once you reach the shrine there is a gift shop and the Shrine (that looks like a castle). You have to get out and walk to the Shrine witch we did not do because my baby was a sleep. But let me tell you the drive up was really all I needed.
