Henry Doorly Zoo--Good Times Abound

Written: Nov 19 '00 (Updated Jul 21 '01)
Pros:Beautiful Zoo
Cons:day was too hot when we went
The Bottom Line: Great zoo if you are traveling to that part of the country.

My favorite city to gamble in is Council Bluffs, Iowa. Council Bluffs is just across the bridge from Omaha, Nebraska. On our last gambling trip we decided to stop at the Henry Doorly Zoo on the way home. The zoo is located in Omaha, Nebraska.

We made a complete day of the zoo trip. After eating breakfast at the motel, we packed everything up and headed out. I might also add that on this particular trip I got to meet one of my online friends and her and her family also met us at the zoo that day.

Admission is as follows:
ages 5 and under-Free
ages 5-11 $4
adults ages 12 and up $7.75
Senior Citizens $6.25

With 2 adults and 4 children ages 2-15 at the time this zoo trip would have cost us $27.25 for my family to get in. Fortunately we had a Friends of the Zoo membership so our admission was free for all of us.
Here is my time to mention that if you travel a lot or even just visit a zoo close by often then it's well worth the money to get a Friends of the Zoo membership. I, however, come from a fairly small town and membership into this is only $25 a year. In the bigger cities I have seen it as high as $100 a year.

We took our lunch in with us in the ice chest. Once inside when we seen the prices of the food there we were very glad that we had that part planned ahead!

We also did not have a stroller with us for the little one. Stroller rental was $3 for the day, not bad really. We chose to rent a big wagon so that we could put little one and the ice chest in it. The rental for this was $6 for the day plus a $10 refundable deposit upon returning the wagon.

We were there in July and it was SUPER hot!! We walked and walked and didn't see near everything that there was to see. With it being so hot, we spent a lot of time in what few buildings were kept air conditioned. One of these buildings being where the penguins were. They are so cute!

The favorite building for the children was the aquarium. It was awesome to walk "underneath" the water in a tunnel. We stood for what seemed forever looking around us and watching all the sea life swimming around and on top of us.

My favorite building was the Rainforest. It's a little spooky because I am always afraid that one of the bats are going to come down and get on me. Or maybe one of the birds that are flying around will swoop down and land on my head. Hasn't happened yet, just a fear of mine. The kids thought that the building smelled bad and wanted to leave fast.

After walking for hours we decided to take a train ride. The train cost $1.50 for ages 3-11 $2.50 ages 12 to adult. It was really nice and we got to see a lot of the back parts of the zoo that we otherwise would not have seen. Of course it was a "tour" so we were hearing about everything as we passed it.

Upon leaving the zoo, I realized that I had left my purse on the train. The zoo was closing and the office called everywhere. No one said that my purse has been turned in. I was just sick! We drove all the way home with me in worry. They promised that they would mail it to me if they found it later. I did recieve my purse in the mail about a month later....everything was intact, even the cash!
