| brewmaster's Full Review: Henry Doorly Zoo |
My family and I just got back from our first trip to the Henry Doorly Zoo in Omaha. Wow, what a zoo! Plan on spending at least a whole day there. Our favorite exhibit was a toss-up between the Lied Jungle and the Aquarium. We did not have time for the IMAX show.
The Lied Jungle is the largest indoor rain forest in the world. I thought it was well laid out and very entertaining. The jungle path runs from below the water displays to above the trees. The kids liked the caves and the waterfalls the best. Birds and monkeys are loose throughout the jungle and make good photo opportunities. We could have spent half a day in the Lied Jungle alone.
The aquarium starts out with a movie then the penguin exhibit. You can see these amusing little creatures swim under water in the see through tank. There is an underwater dome at one end that the kids can explore. The walk through underwater tunnel is the highlight of the aquarium. My 5 year old son was very intrigued by a shark that swam over top of his head in the tunnel. He was also fascinated by a sting ray doing the same. There are numerous aquatic displays that we could spend hours watching. As with the jungle, we could have easily spent half a day in the aquarium. We toured the aquarium in the latter part of the day and found the cool, air conditioned environment to be quite refreshing after walking the outdoor hilly zoo trails on a very hot and humid day.
The rest of the "standard" zoo exhibits reminded me a little of Cincinnati's zoo. There is a train and a tram available for a fee if you are not up to walking. We will all sleep well tonight after all of the walking at the zoo today! My 7 year old daughter found the animal descriptions to be easy to read and entertaining. There are many places to picnic throughout the zoo and I would recommend toting your lunch around if you want to save a few bucks.
We will definitely pay another visit to this very entertaining zoo next time we pass through Omaha.
