Lowry Park Zoo is the zoo that is like the porridge...it's not too big, not too small, just right! In terms of the variety of animals it doesn't rival the MEGA zoos like San Diego, but neither is it so small than you can walk through it in 30 minutes. Getting to the zoo is fairly straight forward with signs helping to guide the way. My son and I arrived at the zoo about 45 minutes after it opened (in July). We parked very close and there were no waiting to buy tickets and get in. The guide map were easily followed. There is a lot of shade in the zoo but beware, Tampa in the summer is a very hot, humid place. Drink lots of water!! There was a short program discussing the rescue and rehabilitation efforts that the zoo performs on manatees. Some of the food locations inside the zoo had not opened even though it was approaching lunch time. Perhaps it could have been because it was a week day. We toured the zoo in about 2 to 2.5 hours. I would definitely recommend going in the morning if possible because (1) it is cooler than the afternoon (2) not crowded and (3) the Florida summer thunderstorms start rolling in right after lunch.
