| Almighty's Full Review: Nashville Zoo at Grassmere |
I'm a huge fan of animals and wildlife, so I make it a point to visit a city's zoo whenever I'm vacationing. I've probably visited a dozen zoos over the past few years and I can honestly say that the Nashville Zoo at Grassmere is by far the WORST ZOO I'VE EVER BEEN TO.
I think we can all agree that you can't have a Zoo without animals, right?! Well, Nashville's Zoo has attempted the impossible. The following is a partial list of animals not found at the Nashville Zoo:
Apes
Bears
Birds
Monkey/Chimps
Elephants
Giraffe
Hippopotamus
Rhinoceros
Apparently Nashville thinks a zoo comprised of two cheetahs, two tigers, a few antelope and zebra combined with a decent reptile house makes for a zoo of high enough quality to charge an admission ($6.00 for adults and $4.00 for kids). As you walk around the zoo you'll find yourself try to hold back laughter at the pathetically small number of animals the zoo actually contains.
The reptile house is admittedly good. Snakes other reptiles and amphibians are housed in a cool easy to navigate hall. If only the rest of the zoo was as abundantly stocked.
Nashville's Zoo contains no petting zoo either! If there is one thing that makes a zoo "kid friendly" it's a petting zoo. Also, be sure to eat and drink before going to the zoo because the concessions are even more scarce than the animals.
The layout of the Nashville Zoo is easy to navigate. A single circular design makes for an easy, yet boring walk. The containment areas (exhibits) are all natural habitat rather than the black metal cages you see in some older zoos. While the zoo is allegedly undergoing substantial renovations, I've been twice and noticed no change in the year separating my trips.
The zoo does contain a vast play area with a huge wooden playscape. With this being the only real attraction of interest to many of the kids who visit the zoo, I'm thinking you'd be much better off going to play in a park for free.
If you are visiting Nashville and interested in seeing animals, be sure to avoid the Zoo. You'd probably see more animals and exhibits at Opryland Hotel (an amazing place if you've never been).
