Sea World is just about at the extreme western end of San Diego, and slightly to the north, in the Mission Bay area. For those of you who don't live here that doesn't mean much, but it puts Sea World right out on the water so that the Bay Watch show is actually on water from the Ocean. That meant a lot to me. It also means that you get a real beautiful view from the Sky Ride, not just of the park, but of the Ocean and of the city.
If you live in or near San Diego an annual pass pays for itself in two visits and I'd highly recommend one. If you visit San Diego regularly you may want to consider getting one even. When I was visiting Sea World regularly we'd go 6 or 7 times a year. In the winter (Winter? In San Diego? Hey! You do get acclimated down here you know!) it is advisable to bundle up because sitting still at the shows, especially higher up in the stands so that you don't get soaked, can get chilly. If you aren't sitting higher up in the stands and you do get soaked you can get even colder and even get sick so play it safe.
My favorite exhibit is the sharks. Ah, yes. Only three things on this planet truly frighten me: sharks, spiders, and people. (All my friends remind me that I'm scared of heights too but the Sky Ride takes care of that. *grin*) My favorite part of the exhibit is where you walk through the tunnel through the actual shark tank and the spooky music is playing. You don't have to actually walk because they have a slow moving people mover so you can stand and look at the sharks and really get the willies and just expand your horizons if sharks don't bother you.
The worst part about Sea World is the worst part about any park, the cost of the drinking water. You pay an exorbitant amount for a tiny little bottle of water and the drinking fountains are few and far in between. I don't drink soda or sweet drinks so purchasing the other drinks available doesn't really quench my thirst either and they too are expensive. The other food is also expensive, but that's to be expected like any other park. When we go we try to bring little snacks and frozen bottles of water.
If you want someone with a summer birthday to feel truly special go to Sea World and stay after dark because then they get fireworks on their birthday. I was 28 and knew better that they weren't for me, but it still made me feel special. Avoid the park on the 4th of July, though, unless you want to wrestle with auto traffic and parking and pedestrian traffic and end up being squeezed out of the place you saved for hours. We eventually rode the Sky Ride during the entire fireworks display, but I don't know if they still allow that. It was the best seat in the house, though!!!!
