| marytara's Full Review: Seneca Park Zoo |
The Seneca Park Zoo is a small zoo situated in Rochester, New York. Its open every day of the year, though I wouldn't recommend going in the winter or on a rainy day. This is definitely a zoo to visit on a nice Spring or Fall day, or during the summer.
Hours The zoo is opens around 10am and closes around 5pm. If you decide to go to the Seneca Park Zoo, you don't need to worry about getting there early so that you can see as much as possible. In fact, you can see the entire zoo in about 1-3 hrs depending on how long you spend at each exhibit (or if eat lunch, play in the play area, etc).
Admission to the zoo is reasonable: $5.00 for Adults, $2.00 for Kids (3-12), $4 for Seniors and Free to Kids 2 and under.
My son is only a few months old, and while he can't get much out of the zoo, this is a place we've taken him. Why? Well, thats simple. It was gorgeous Rochester day (and thats rare) and we wanted to spend some quality outdoor time. Packed the diaper bag, put the Baby Trend Expedition jogging stroller into my Subaru Outback ,put a hat on Alex and loaded him into the car and off my husband and I went.
One thing thats really nice about the zoo is that its situated in a park like setting. There are many places where you could stop and have a picnic, or enjoy playing on swings and junglegyms if you have young children.
An added bonus: Free Parking!
This zoo is very stroller-friendly and kid-friendly. You probably won't need your stroller if you child is older, its not as if their legs will get tired walking through the zoo which is really the equivalent of walking maybe a few blocks. But if you do have a child in a stroller, you are golden. All the paths are paved very smooth and wide enough to accomodate strollers. Good thing, because I think everyone who I saw at the zoo today had at least one stroller or child in tow .
Oh, and on to the Animals. The animals are normally the reason we come to the zoo, ne c'est pas? . Well - There aren't a lot of animals at this zoo. But they're working on that. And this zoo has had some great traveling exhibits, including white tigers and giraffes in the past. Check the zoo website http://www.senecazoo.com (which is maintained by area high school children for a full list of animals at the zoo.
Today, I saw: hyenas, wolves, sea lions, polar bears, penguins, elephants, gorillas (including a sweet little baby girl gorilla), and I even got to see turtles mating! Lucky me!
The zoo has been working over the past 10 years or so on updating its exhibits. There is the traditional "animals behind glass and iron bars" type part of the zoo, but there are also other wonderful indoor/outdoor exhibits including underwater viewing. I really like the underwater viewing, its so great to see a polar bear or a sea lion swimming up close like that. And the Kids love it.
There's also a special area for kids, including a hands-on exhibit, a wading area, a rope spider web to climb on, and tons of other kids stuff.
So, yes, its small and there aren't A LOT on animals. But what they do have is quality, and the zoo is just the right size for little feet, or a family outing. I know I'll definitely be going back there a lot over the next couple years.
I recommend the zoo for anyone looking for a place for a casual stroller walk, or for anyone with young children interested in having a nice outdoor day and to see some animals!
Watch out for those turtles!
