| paramchuk's Full Review: Banff-Sunshine Village |
Seeing as I used to live about 1 hour drive from Banff, I frequented this amazing place, usually every weekend for at least one day of snowboarding. And let me tell you, it is amazing. This mountiain has some of the best snow I have ever laid my boots into, and at all times of the season. Once, in the time of year where it should have been spring conditions, Banff received around 8 - 12 inches of FRESH POWDER nightly for approx 1 week. And because it is not usually busy during this time of the year, there was an abundance of virgin powder found everywhere on the mountain. And I hear this past year it was jsut as amazing...but I could not be there to try it out, much to my disappointment.
This mountain has many different areas which can be skiied, for varying skill levels. One of my favorit places to go was off of the T-bar near the lodge, but then required a tough 30 minute hike to a "special area" called the "Backdoor". This backdoor was amazing, usually untracked, as only a few people know of it, from regulars showing friends and that is about all. The Backdoor starts out from the top of a mountain overlooking a beautiful valley untouched by man, an amazing sight. For the danger loving, the first thing that can be done here is a cliff jump. I took this track a couple times, but only hit the cliff once... after that it was too scary. When I hit the 15 foot cliff there was amazing powder so I was not afraid of injury, however, to not be as scared I did not look over the edge prior to my first jump...just went and did it. Quite exciting. Then after this cliff, it is single track through some trees and lots of little jumps down a path to the advanced mountian known as Goats Eye.
Goats Eye mountain is a wind blown, steep mountain. A good place to practice your skills, and build courage for beginners. Some people spend the whole day here jumping rocks, trees and whatever else they can find. I find Goats Eye good for a few runs, as I am not that advanced (yet).
This resort is good for every skill level, from the beginner to the advanced, with not much room for bordom, as there are rarely lines with the multiple Quad chairs on the mountain.
The weather does not usually get too cold either, which is a plus...but bring sunscreen and lipgloss.
