Pros:Excellent Fall Line Skiing, Challenging Terrain, Lots of Powder, Cheap Lift Tickets
Cons:no official on-hill accommodation, Season usually doesn't begin until mid to late December
I have been skiing Castle Mountain for 20 years and have yet to find a ski hill which offers better skiing for such a great price ($35 Canadian/ $24 US). With lots of vertical, tons of snow, little to no lift lines and friendly locals, no ski hill in Alberta or Southeastern British Columbia can compete. Castle Mountain's claim to fame is the incredible "Cold Smoke" Powder they frequently receive throughout the season. You honestly feel like you are skiing in clouds. The powder is light and dry and easy for even the most inexperienced powder skier to conquer. I have never skied a mountain with the amount of fall line skiing Castle Mtn. has if you are an Intermediate to Advanced Skier you will feel like you have come upon hidden treasure when you finish a ski day at Castle. A good idea is to link up with a "Ski Host" at the hill. They know all of the out-of-the-way runs and hidden detours which will provide you with a chance to get "first tracks", even near the end of the day.
The T-Bar pub, located at the base of the mountain, has the best pizza west of Italy. The new lodge is big enough to hold 1500 skiers but still has a warm, friendly atmosphere (and great entertainment at happy hour Saturday nights!!). The only negatives are a short ski season (December to early April), and a lack of on-hill accommodation (the nearest town is 25 minutes away). Prices in nearby Pincher Creek however, are extremely reasonable and usually include a lift ticket.
