The Whistler-Blackcomb ski area is amazing -- incredible beauty, a great village (a la Vail) and challenging runs for all levels. Blackcomb is part of a glacier, which makes it much more like East Coast skiing -- icy and fast. Whistler, on the other hand, is prototypical WEST Coast skiing -- bowls, fluffy snow, etc. That the two are right next to each other provides this great contrast - you can ski one in the morning and the other in the afternoon. I ended up sticking with Whistler because I prefer those conditions. The Peak Chair provides some amazingly fun runs, but be forewarned that those with a fear of heights will NOT enjoy the lift ride up!
Additionally -- and very importantly -- Garibaldi's is the apres-ski place at the bottom of Whistler. It is, by far, the best apres-ski place I have ever been to. Great drinks, comfortable couches, board games, roaring fire and a view of the slopes.
Finally, if you are into major nightlife, this might not be the place for you. There are a few bars that get crowded, but the village was pretty quiet most of the time -- which we liked, but this isn't for everyone.
