Whistler is awesome. If you are reading this review, you've already decided that. The next question is where to stay?
1) I recommend ski-in, ski-out. It makes a huge difference in the morning when you can just pop on your skiis vs waiting for a shuttle and driving to every hotel known to man. It will cost you about an extra $100 a night but for 4 people, it's worth the 45 minutes of ski time you'll save every day.
2)I recommend using the internet for booking. Whistler Reservations was online and provided great service. The account rep will call you with quotes and discuss where you should stay. The internet site is also very useful because it provides a good map just in case you ignore my advice on point one and stay in the village. If you decide not to splurge, I do recommend staying as close to the Whistler Gondala as possible--again to minimize the transit times at the end of the day.
ONe tip--confirm your reservation with the hotel you are staying at separately. Our hotel didn't recognize the reservation from Whistler Reservations at first. A side perk--Whistler Reservations sends you a complimentary subscription to Ski magazine for the next ski season!
General tips
1)Rental equipment is pretty convenient. There are many places right by the gondola and can be returned/rented easily. It's quite expensive, however, at about 35 bucks per day for performance gear.
2) Eat on the top of the mountain. If you end up down by the gondola during lunch, you'll pay for it in a long long lift line to get back up the mountain. I recommend packing for lunch and enjoying the view at the upper lodges.
3) If you are driving from Seattle, prepare for a very long border crossing. ONe tip is to use the trucker's border crossing which has a shorter line.
4) Skiing wise, prepare with a map to chart your runs for the day. Unlike many colorado mountains, once you end up down too far on Blackcomb, you're pretty stuck. It takes awhile to get back to some nicer areas. Whistler mountain is particularly weak in this area. It's a pleasant but simple mountain and just doesn't have the oomph of blackcomb. However, once you cross over to Whistler, there isn't a good run to cross back into blackcomb. If you have multiple days at whistler, i'd spend 80% of my time in Blackcomb.
5) Try the Creperie in the shopping center with the grocery store. I can't recall the address but the Creperie is around the back of the mall with the grocery store. It's cheap and has the best food for the price in the area!
Have fun--it's wonderful
