I have lived in Northern California no w for over 15 years now, and all those years I have been skiing in Tahoe. I have skied at SQUAW Valley, Alpine Meadows, Donner Ski Ranch, Sugar Bowl, Incline Village, Mt. Rose, Heavenly, and North Star, as well as Kirkwood. And even after visiting all those ski resorts multiple times, Kirkwood still comes out on top.
If you are an avid skier or snowboarder there is no ifs ands or butts about it- the terrain at Kirkwood just ROCKS! There are tons of chutes and trails through the trees, great traverses, incredibly steep stuff, and with an 8200 ft. base some of the best powder around in the Tahoe area.
The Kirkwood chairs are usually not as crowded, and the lifts are cleverly positioned in order to give snow riders as many different options and exposure to as much different terrain as possible. This gives repeat skiers the great joy of always have new places to explore, and always discovering new terrain that you have not yet skied on.
Kirkwood is not in the main Tahoe area, but instead a little bit South West of Tahoe. This is actually a huge positive as you do not have to face all the Tahoe crowds at the resort, or on the highway getting there or going back to the bay area. Kirkwood also has more of a "homey" family-owned feeling because it is set apart from the mad crowds in Tahoe.
The only major problem about Kirkwood being far away from the Tahoe area is that you are limited to Kirkwood lodging. Kirkwood has plenty of condos and rooms in the lodge, but be sure to reserve ahead of time, as things do get booked rather quickly. The other option (which I do quite often) is to take advantage of the fact that Kirkwood is a little bit closer to the bay area, and easier to get to, and just go on a day trip. Leave at like 5am and you will be back by 9 pm (after a FULL day of snow riding!)
