I visited Breckenridge the spring of 1997. From my experiences there I would definitely recommend the other major resorts in Colorado for their skiing enjoyment. I have skied all of Summit Co., Lake Tahoe, Vail, Snowmass, Big Mt. Montana, Much of VT and would rank the skiing at Breck far less enjoyable than the other resorts.
The problems I found with Breck were that if you weren't staying on the mountain; the commuter lots are miles from the slopes, fill up early, and the buses aren't as reliable as they are elsewhere. The only good thing about this very spread out parking was that it lead to a lack of congestion at the end of the day when exiting the lots.
Another disadvantage of Breck is that the bottom half of the mountains are flat as a board, and you need to ride at least a lift or two before an intermediate skier finds suitable terrain. Once on the mountain, Breck is too wide open to the elements and from my experience and friends from the area it is always windy even on nice sunny days.
With the vast number of peaks at Breck being spread out from one end to the other, it makes it extremely hard to get around. You really have to dedicate yourself to skiing one side, unless you feel like traversing on mile long catwalks across the resort.
As for a reason to visit Breckenridge, even though I recommend skiing at the other resorts, I would definitely make a point of going to Breckenridge(the town) for dinner and nightlife. There are tons of shops and restaurants throughout this cool ski town. My overall rating below is for the skiing only!
