I just returned from a two week vacation in Steamboat. Everything about the trip was fantastic. We had plenty of sunshine and powder, no crowds or liftlines, and plenty of Steamboat hospitality.
Highlights:
Large mountain with lots of varied terrain. Beginners to experts would all be happy here.
Friendly small town atmosphere and super friendly people.
Steamboat has attractions for the single party crowd as well as the family crowd.
The childrens ski school is one of the best in the nation.
Lots of good restaurants in the area. Top scores for La Montana for nouveau Mexican food, Alpine Bistro for Swiss specialities (don't miss the chocolate fondue) and the Smokehouse restaurant for fantastic western style BBQ. Special mention for the Taphouse for a great beer selection and the spiciest wings around.
For apres ski the Inferno at the base of the gondola is the place to be. They spin a shot wheel a couple of times during happy hour and shots range in price from 35 cents to 95 cents for 15 minutes.
Bring your suit to take a dip in the towns thermal pool and waterslide or for the more adventurous head to Strawberry Park outside of town for au natural dipping.
Lodging: If you can afford it there are many ski in/ski out condos and the Sheraton hotel. Offsite there are lots of other condos available with great free public transportation. For the economy minded there is a Days Inn but I would suggest staying at the world famous Rabbit Ears motel and the Western motel in town.
