My brother is a snowboard instructor (gold certified) at Steamboat Springs and I thought it would be a great idea for me to leave the warmth and sunshine of my home in Orlando, FL to learn how to snowboard. I arrived in Steamboat and was immediately impressed with the small town atmosphere and the size of the resort. The only skiing I had done was at Wisp Ski Resort in Western MD.
After settling in I went out and started my quest -- learn how to snowboard. I found that at the resort, if you are not taking lessons there is little area to actually learn how to either ski or snowboard. The instructors let me use their little roped off part of the slope to do my own learning (my brother was not with me).
I found the snow to be fabulous but I did find that the only way to get into a lodge was to buy a lift ticket because both lodges are on top of the mountain. I thought that was a little strange that BOTH of them were up there.
The second time I went out I DID go out with my brother and he took me to the top of the hill. I found right away that this mountain is not a mountain for snowboarders. The green trails are too narrow for the sweeping turns needed by beginning snowboarders and there are a lot of trails that are either too flat or actually going uphill making it very difficult for the snowboarder to traverse (snowboarders don't carry poles).
The nightlife was decent. Although compared to Orlando (Disney World) I don't know if there is a much better place than home so I might be slightly biased. The roads were kept very clean & snow-free but again the fact that I had a snowboard in my hand and not skis definately made it a little difficult for me.
I am told there are other mountains out there that are much better for both snowboarding and for beginners and hopefully next year I will be able to take another trip out west to experience them.
