This last year I've made two trips out to Steamboat Springs. I loved both of them. The first trip was made in the summer. I drove hwy 40 from Salt Lake City to Steamboat and camped outside of the city. The drive alone is great, lots of things to look at and it was common to see deer along the road. Once near the town, I was able to find a camping spot with out any problems, even though I didn't make any plans in advance. I didn't feel like hiking to any site, so I found one near the highway. After a short drive from the highway, I found a site and it was isolated enough that I couldn't hear any road travel. It was a great spot, the view was heavenly and calm. I'm a little sad because I only got a little hike in while I was there.
The city of Steamboat Springs is alive in the summer. The main street has many shops and local stores to keep anyone active. There are also a couple bars, including a micro-brewery. For those on a budget major stores, Safeway and more, are easy to find and they don't have extremely high resort town prices. So if your not into the camping, the city itself is worth visiting.
The second trip was this December while I was driving to Denver. Now the point of this trip was to get a day of skiing during my vacation. So I used the web sites of the Colorado ski resorts to determine which might have the best conditions, this year was dry for both Colorado and Utah. I would suggest doing this if you are concerned about the snow anywhere. Again I drove out to Steamboat Springs and slept in my car, something I wouldn't recommend to most. That night 6-12 inches of the lightest powder fell and the next day I had one of the best days of skiing in my life. I think I say that after every trip there.
Steamboat has great runs covering every ability of skier and enough mountain that the runs are not crowded and for $54 a day I would hope so. After Skiing two bump runs I had realized that Steamboat hadn't been sheered clean of bumps by snow boarders, something I have experienced more then I would like in Utah. Skier and boarders can live in harmony and they do so at Steamboat. So if your thinking of taking a group trip somewhere and you got a mixture of skiers and snow boarders, Steamboat will keep everyone happy.
But not everything is heaven near Steamboat. If you are driving from or to Denver you will have to cross two mountain passes. Rabbit Ears pass outside of Steamboat can get ugly and be prepared to put on chains and drive slowly. Four wheel drive is nice but it wont help when all four tires are sliding. So if the weather is bad, be careful driving.
