Went in early January, and the snow was great compared to other parts of the region. Not too much of a problem with rocks even this early in the season.
Lone Mountain is stunningly beautiful in addition to having great terrain. And you can ski down from the top of this massive mountain! It's rare that I get scared of a double black run, but when skiing down from the top of the mountain, I definitely got some butterflies. Experts will love this place for some true big mountain skiing, though there is also ample terrain available for intermediates and more advanced beginners. Don't forget to visit the Thunderwolf, Southern Comfort, and Lone Moose areas of the resort on Andesite Mountain. These areas get even fewer people than the rest of the mountain (which is already uncrowded) and have some great trails and tree-skiing. The only place you can expect to encounter lift lines is on the tram to the summit (which is worth the wait, anyway, even if only to see the views and ride the tram back down).
With Big Sky now being connected to the new Moonlight Basin ski area on the north side of Lone Mountain, you will not get bored if you're here for a weeklong vacation. If I could choose one place to ski for the rest of my life, Big Sky/Moonlight Basin would certainly be up there at the top.
Main downside is the expensive prices for lodging and food in the area, but I guess that's to be expected at a destination resort.
