Last year a traveled all the way across the country to Montana. Although it was a long and tiring trip, it was a small price to pay to ski at one of the greatest ski resorts in the nation. I have skied the big resorts in Colorado such as Vail, Beaver Creek, and Steamboat, and I have to say the Big Sky is definitely their equal.
My friend and I had decided on Big Sky for numerous reasons. Montana offers a climate which holds the promise of good snow even in the spring. In addition, Big Sky had all the appeal of a large, easily accessible mountain with the reputation of having no lift lines. We found that all our expectations were true. We got a fair bit of snow while there and the longest we had to wait in a lift line was maybe three or four minutes.
As expert skiers we found that the mountain provided ample challenging terrain and numerous areas to explore. Although we did not venture down the "Big Couliour" I can say that anyone looking for some extremely difficult skiing could find it at Big Sky. Of course, there are still a myriad of beginner and intermediate trails which are great for the more laid back skier.
I would definitely suggest this mountain for skiers who like to get to the mountain as the lifts are opening, ski all day, and go back to the resort, lodge, or hotel and fall asleep around 9:00 pm after a big dinner. We did go out for dinner at night but it didn't seem like there was too much of a night life. This is not the place for people who are more concerned with the apres ski.
My suggestion is that if you go to Big Sky, stay in one of the lodges/resorts/hotels which is not right on the mountain. There's a bus free bus that will take you right to the mountain. In addition, we found it fairly easy to sneak into the hot tubs and pools at the other, more expensive resorts.
