Big Sky Montana is one the most incredible places to visit for a winter time adventure. The recent expansion of the mountain offers the expert skier some of the steepest chutes found anywhere in the world. Big Sky boasts more vertical than any other mountain in the United States due to the addition of the Lone Peak Tram. Once at the summit you will quickly understand why Big Sky is a serious mountain even for the most expert of skiers.
The best time to visit Big Sky is in February due to the fact that Montana is more likely to receive more snow a little later in the season. Great places to ski powder and make first tracks is off of the Challenger Lift on the right side of the mountain. Skiing below the lift in the Big Rock Tongue Area is always good along with going off of the backside into the Nashville Bowl when it is open. Great powder stash areas. Another great area is off of the Lone Peak Tram including the South Face but also Smithy's when open. You must be wearing a helmet and have avalanche equipment in order to ski Smithy's if and when it is open. Another great run for the advanced skier is Snake Pit which is located on Andesite Mountain. This trail has many drops and a few cliff areas which hold great powder. It is a must! Big Sky also has many runs for the entire family. The best part about the mountain are the lack of lift lines and the lack of people. It is a very large mountain, over 3000 acres, with much to offer.
Lodging at Big Sky while nice can be expensive. I have found staying in Bozeman is much cheaper $30-50 a night at hotels like the Lewis and Clark. It takes 45min from Bozeman to get to Big Sky up the Gallatin Canyon. By staying in Bozeman it also allows you to ski Bridger Bowl which is 20min outside of town. Bridger is incredible, a must visit! Bozeman also has great bars, restaurants, and nightlife because of being a university town. Taking a day off from skiing and driving to West Yellowstone to go snowmobiling should also be done. Big Sky is a place where you will want to return year after year.
