When I was in school I skied every weekend at Bridger Bowl. I have skied many other ski resorts since, but for a relaxed atmosphere and a great learning environment with plenty of room for advancement, it is still one of the best places.
Most skiers at Bridger Bowl come from the nearby city of Bozeman, which is about 20 miles away. Since Bozeman is a college town, many of the regular skiers are college students. However, Bridger is for everyone: families, kids, seniors, all are seen skiing there. The snow is usually excellent; no snowmaking equipment is needed.
There is at least five lifts there, with usually short lift lines. Vertical drop is about 2000 feet. Runs start at the beginner level all the way through black diamond. It is said that if you can ski everything a Bridger Bowl, you can ski anything anywhere. I learned to downhill ski at this mountain, and by the time I finished school I had skied off "the ridge" which definitely is black area, probably a harder black than most resorts' black runs.
If you are headed through Montana, take a day off at Bridger Bowl. It's a great place!
