I live near DC and I have been to Whitetail about a dozen times to snowboard and ski.
When it's snowing in Snowshoe, it's raining at Whitetail. Whitetail is incredibly crowded, even with their system that limits lift ticket sales. Beginners crowd the slopes like ants. Even the food costs too much. The terrain is all the same--every trail is like every other one.
Considering all my gripes, you may wonder why I even bother to go. Well, Whitetail's best asset is proximity to DC. It's close. That's like saying about a boyfriend or girlfriend, "Well, at least they'll hang out with me." Some praise.
Relative to all the other ski areas in the Mid-Atlantic, it's the 2nd worst next to Ski Liberty. Well, I suppose they have a decent snowboard park. They also have a half-pipe, but it's hardly ever open.
If you really want to know why Whitetail is no good, go to their web page and try to find the Snow Report. It's hard. You see, they're trying to hide it from you.
