My mom and dad have visited Gatlinburg many many times and always suggested that we visit it too. Well we were in TN this summer and almost didn't visit Gatlinburg, because it thought it was just a hokey shopping area. WRONG..Was I ever glad we visited this beautiful town in the smoky mountains.
Gatlinburg sits in the foothills of the mountains. The BEST TIP I got for visiting downtown Gatlinburg was to use the shuttle bus in the visitors center. You park free, and take a .50 cent shuttle (purple) bus into downtown Gatlinburg. Believe me, you'll appreciate this tip once you enter the downtown area and see traffic, traffic, and not a lot of places to park!
We went to three Ripley amusement places and loved them. They were the Aquarium, Ripley's Believe it or Not, and the 4-D motion theater. You can walk up and down both sides of the "parkway/strip" in Gatlinburg and there are shops after shops. Here's some of the types of stores to see:
Pancake Supplies stores
Quilt shops
Fudge shops
T-Shirts
Toy Shops
Restaraunts
Amusement places
Minature golfing
Jewelry shops
Motels
You name it you can probably find. We called it the Hillbilly Las Vegas! It is a neat strip to walk down, and lots of things to do and see and eat. There is also a creek running through the middle of the downtown area with beautiful rocks and sounds coming from it that just adds a touch of quaintness to the area that will make you feel at home!
There is a tram lift available in the middle of the downtown area that takes you up the side of the mountain for glorious views, and once there you'll see why they are called the great smoky mountains.
This would be a wonderful vacation spot for a family to stay for three or four days. Sure it could be expensive, but all great fun spots are. We were only there for a day but loved it, and can't wait to get back!
