Ober Gatlinburg great place to ski if you live in the South.

Pros: 4 hours from Atlanta Ga.
Can ski without a coat on sunny days.
Cons: none that I can think of.
The Bottom Line: If you want to snow ski and you live in the south, Ober Gatlinburg is close enough for a day trip from Atlanta.

We began taking our children to Ober Gatlinburg when they were 9 years old. It was 4 hours from home and we wanted them to learn to ski before we took them somewhere further North. If they didn't like it then we wouldn't waste money on a plane ticket. They loved it. After about 2 hours they got the hang of it with my husband teaching them and now I have to stand at the bottom at closing time and make them come inside. The ski patrol is very watchful and the ski school is recommended. The gentlemen that taught me to ski at Ober had learned to ski in Switzerland. He said that learning at Ober was an excellent idea. He said if you can ski Ober Gatlinburg then you can ski anywhere in the world. Thats because they have a variation of slopes for beginners and interm. There are things that people need to be aware of when they go to Ober Gatlinburg. First of all it is in the SOUTH. Don't go expecting it to be snow like further North or out west. If it hasn't snowed, once the temperature gets below freezing, they begin to make snow. This means that these huge snow guns placed all over the mountain begin to blow snow. If your on the ski lift you may get snow blown on you. If you are dressed to snow ski there shouldn't be a problem, just wear goggles. For my family this is the perfect place if you come home on Friday afternoon and want to ski on the weekend and be back for school or work on Monday. Last year we went 4 times for quick trips. This year with the children turning 13 we will be taking them to a larger ski resort but we will still be making our quick weekend trips to get a day of skiing in at Ober.
