I have visited Gatlinburg several times and have enjoyed it every single time, and look forward to returning many more times in the future! The area is as picturesque as any mountain postcard you'll find (of the Eastern United States) and there are mountain streams and winding roads with beautiful scenery around every turn.
In my opinion, the skiing is not the greatest here -- definately commercialized and I would not ultimately pay money to wind up here as my ski resort destination. A better option would be to ski at another, larger resort in a different area with more choices and better slopes and save your time in Gatlinburg for late spring (when it's still cool), or, even better, the first two weeks in October, when the leaves change each year.
The area offers a wide array of choices as far as accommodations go -- everything from tent camping, to rustic cabins, to luxury condos and log cabins. Your best bet is to contact the local Chamber of Commerce and describe to them the types of lodging and activities you are interested in and have that information mailed to you. And make your accommodations and dinner reservations early -- things book up fast, especially in Jan/Feb/Oct.
The surrounding areas (within 30 mi radius in all directions) is chock full of activities, from outlet shopping to white water rafting. And if you're looking to get married or renew your vows then you're looking in the right area. Beautiful chapels abound, and you can even pick up your marriage license in 15 minutes or less (on a Saturday, even!) from the City Hall in Sevierville, only 10 minutes outside of Gatlinburg.
A wonderful area for honeymooners, families, couples, and college students. There is an activity for everyone!
