| Gin772's Full Review: Ober Gatlinburg |
My husband and I went to Gatlinburg for a weekend getaway. First, let me say, don't let Pepper Tree Resorts talk you into a tour, they really messed up our trip. They are unorganized and you have to fight for what they promise you. Now, for the area in general, it is a nice place to visit for a weekend, but not much longer. There is plenty to do, whether its just the two of you for a romantic weekend or the whole family. I would recommend renting a villa or cabin for a romantic getaway, the fireplaces and jacuzzis on the decks are incredible. Ober Gatlinburg was an interesting experience. The trolley ride up was exciting and a little nerve racking as you realize how far up you are with nothing below you but mountains. Once at the top the view is incredible. The attractions are simple; ski slopes, tobaggan rides, a few kids rides, bungee jumping, ice skating and carnival type games. The little shops inside are quant and simple but rather pricey. The bear exhibit was interesting but not worth the $2.00 admission charge. Overall I would have to say its something nice to do with the kids, but be prepared to spend some cash. Now, a little insider tip and warning: DO NOT go up the tram if there is even a possibility for rain, check the FORECAST! When we headed up the day was beautiful. About 20 minutes after we got to the top of the mountain it started raining, just about the time we were headed up on the scenic chair lift, with no way to turn around. We got stuck at the top for almost an hour while we waited to try to get back to the entertainment complex. Once it starts to rain or lightning occurs all lifts shut down. So, when it finally let up for us to get back to the complex we were soaked. Then we had to wait another 2 hours before we could get back to the bottom of the mountain on the big tram. As we were going down the tram stopped six times in mid-flight because it detects lightening up to 20 miles away and automatically shuts off. This was a hair raising experience. Being crammed into this little car with 60 other people, who possibly forgot their deodorant that morning, hanging by a simple cable over a mountain. Believe me, the thoughts that go through your mind are not encouraging. So, I would say enjoy this tourist attraction with your children, lots of cash in your pocket, plenty of time to get back off the mountain, and with the sun shining and no chance of rain!!
